The Sanabrese Route

Date: 29/10/2019

In the past pilgrims were not just only following a way, but also wandering around until the find the local Holy places. After the discovery of the Apostle's tomb, the number of pilgrims duplicated, and they started to follow the Sanabrese roads to finish in Santiago de Compostela.

The Camino begins whre the Monastery of Moreruela is located, previously known as Santiago de Moreruela. It is the oldest Cistercian monastery in Spain of which the structure, door and fountain of the pilgrim is still preserved. Two routes can be followed. The first, travel along the Vía de la Plata to Astorga, then linking with the French Way and the second, going along the Sanabrese Way through Tábara, Santa Marta de Tera, Rionegro del Puente and Puebla de Sanabria.

Along the Sanabrese Way, apart from enjoying one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Iberian peninsula, with the contrasts between the yellow fields of Castile and the green ones of the Sanabria and Galicia area, we will also enjoy jewels like the Church of San Salvador in Tábara, the Monastery of Moreruela, the Natural Park of Lake Sanabria, the Sanctuary of La Tuiza in Lubián, the Millennium Bridge in Orense, among others.

Thanks to the work of the Friends of the Camino de Santiago de Zamora, the Camino is perfectly marked throughout the route thanks to yellow arrows and informative posts, which makes the route much easier and more comfortable.
