The Jubilee year or Xacobean year is celebrated when the25thof July (Santiago’s Day) coincide with being a Sunday. This happens every 6,5, 6 and 11 years, which mean in a century there is 4 Jubilee years, and the next one will be on 2021. So it is a good moment to start thinking about it! I might look far away, but anticipation for this occasion is esential. Last Jubilee year, around 10 MILLIONS of pilgrims visited the cathedral.
And what makes the Xacobean year so special? The catholic chuch will give forgiven to those pilgrims who where doing their way on a Xacobean year. But is not as easy as just visit the cathedral as a simple tourist, there's a few requirements for being forgiven:
- Do the way to visit Santiago de Compostela's cathedral or the Mother Church of Santiago in the Canary Islands.
- Once there, pray the Pater Noster or the Creed.
- Attend to the Holy Mass
- Pray for the Pope
- To confess and recieve the communion. (15 days before or after visiting the cathedral)
- Used the Holy Door to enter the cathedral. (Even if this is not obligatory, is very traditional)
Also, you have to remember that the Jubilee year starts on the 13 of December, when theArchbishop of Santiago de Compostela opens the Holy Door.
